Located just east of Riverside, Moreno Valley is part of Riverside County and within the Greater Los Angeles area. In 1918, the installation of March Field by the United States Army Air Service (now the Air Force) prompted a growth in the city’s population, though Moreno Valley would not become incorporated until 1984. Today, the March Air Reserve Base still serves as one of the major employers in the area, along with the Moreno Valley Unified School District, and the Riverside County Regional Medical Center. The city’s financial health was affirmed by ranking number 3 out of 116 cities in the 2017 City Fiscal Strength Index by The Fiscal Times. Local points of interest include:
- Box Springs Mountain Park. A steep 7.1-mile hiking trail offers beautiful views, though be mindful of level of difficulty and wildlife (including lions). A giant “M” atop the peak is periodically illuminated for local causes.
- March Field Air Museum. Displaying over 70 aircraft and more than 30,000 artifacts, this museum celebrates aviation pioneers and the history of March Field. Exhibits also include space exploration.
Moreno Valley Community Park. With an infusion of renovation funds in 2018, this park boasts four state-of-the-art soccer fields with professional-grade synthetic turf.
